Considering Vaginal Rejuvenation?
Vaginal rejuvenation can involve several procedures, the most common being vaginoplasty (vaginal tightening) and labiaplasty (reshaping of the labia, the inner and the outer lips of the vagina). This procedure is becoming more and more popular. For women who want to recontour their vagina after childbirth, aging, weight loss, or injury, this is a great surgical option.
When to Consider This Procedure
It’s recommended that you consider this procedure in the following situations:
•If the contours of your vagina have stretched or altered over time.
•If you experience pain or soreness with activities such as bicycle riding, horseback riding, and sexual activity.
•If successive vaginal deliveries have reduced your sensation while having intercourse.
What Are Your Options?
Your plastic surgeon will sit down and discuss as to which areas of enhancement or correction are best suited for you:
•Labia minora reduction – Labiaplasty removes any redundant tissue alongside the ruffled edge, thereby reducing the protrusion and size of the labia minora.
•Labia majora reduction – This removes the excess tissue and skin from the vulva’s outer lips. The incisions are hidden on the inner edge of the labia.
•Reduction of the mons pubis – If there is excess bulk on the mons, it will end up looking disproportionate with the rest of the body. Surgical resection or liposuction can improve the contours of your clitoral hood with minimal scarring.
•Remodeling of the clitoral hood – Reduction of the clitoral hood removes the extra protruding tissue overlying the clitoris.
How Is Vaginal Rejuvenation Performed?
Your surgeon will tell you which surgical technique is most appropriate for your procedure based on your needs and goals. Laser vaginal rejuvenation is the most common option. The laser is basically used like a scalpel but allows for greater precision and less bleeding.
For vaginoplasty, the incisions are usually made in the mucosal walls. If there is any extra tissue, it will be removed, and then the incisions inside the vagina will be sutured closed.
For labiaplasty, the desired vulval/labial contours are outlined with a marker. The incisions are then made to the labia majora or minora so that any excess tissue can be done away with. The surgeon uses a laser to remove any tissue that is beyond the desired contour and places skin staples to align the labial edges. The sutures used for the procedure are dissoluble, and once the procedure is complete, the skin staples are removed.
Preparation for the Procedure
Your plastic surgeon will give you detailed preoperative instructions and answer all the questions you might have. They will also perform a thorough physical exam and take a detailed medical history to determine how fit you are for the surgery. Before the surgery, you will have to:
•Stop smoking to promote optimal healing.
•Stop taking aspirin, herbal drugs, and other anti-inflammatory medication, all of which can cause excess bleeding.
•Hydrate yourself, as it is crucial for a safe recovery.
Vaginal rejuvenation is performed on an outpatient basis. Please make sure you have someone to drive you home from the surgery and stay with you for the first night after the surgery.
